Huntly Scholarship Program

The Huntly Scholar Program was instituted in 2019 through a generous grant by a donor who believed in providing an opportunity to local families who could not otherwise afford a WCDS education. This Scholarship Program provides up to half-off tuition for new students to WCDS who exhibit a strong desire to achieve in a rigorous academic atmosphere, and in small classes where every student is integral to the school community. The School's mission is to foster development of each student's character and intellect to their fullest potential, encouraging scholarship, diligence, and self-discipline, as well as respect for and service to others. If this is your dream, we welcome you to WCDS!

Becoming a Huntly Scholar at Wakefield Country Day School opened up so many doors for me.  Coming out of a public school and transferring to WCDS as a junior, I wasn't sure if I would be able to pursue my lifelong dreams of going to the University of Virginia and pursuing a profession in the medical field.  My teachers and the administration at WCDS ensured I was prepared. This year I will successfully begin my third year at UVA majoring in biology and minoring in Latin American Studies and am planning to go to grad school to become a PA.  As a first-gen college student, WCDS introduced me to so much:  interesting and challenging classes, leadership opportunities in the classroom and on the athletic fields, many different cultures, and enduring friendships with both my classmates and my teachers. I'm so thankful for having had this opportunity, and my two younger brothers and two cousins are also Huntly Scholars, so my family and I are set firmly on the path to a successful future.  --- Yancy

The experience I have had over the past four years has been transformative.  When the Oliver Scholars (a NYC organization that helps place black and hispanic middle-school students in college prepartory schools) found Wakefield Country Day School's Huntly Scholars Program, my life changed.  I've had the opportunity to experience so many new things I was not accustomed to: outdoors activities especially living so close to the Shenandoah National Park, learning about the local area, being embedded in a new environment, and studying hard and earning admittance to several colleges with a great deal of merit scholarship.  Maybe most importantly, I made some of my best friends at Wakefield, and because WCDS has an active international student population, I was able to learn about new cultures outside of my own.  I am grateful for the Huntly Scholar Program as it has allowed me to grow as a person.  -- Jeannel

During my eighth grade year, I was awarded a Huntly Merit Scholarship that enabled me to attend Wakefield Country Day School. Since I first stepped into WCDS, I have felt at home. I value feeling welcomed by my teachers and classmates, as well as being a part of the larger Rappahannock community.  My teachers have become role models for me, assisting me with my classwork and supporting me with my future goals. I have made extraordinary friendships that I am positive will stay with me for the rest of my life.  Moreover, I have been able to study at an academically strong school with a wide range of extracurricular activities. It has been an honor to call myself a Wakefield Country Day School Owl.  I have been able to take classes that interest me, form and join clubs, and learn important life skills.  It has become my second home and it is a place truly based on supporting students to become successful in whatever they aspire to be.  I will forever be thankful for the opportunity and gift I was given. – Julianna
