Spring Athletic Awards Ceremony

Athletic Director Mike Costello led our Spring Athletic Awards Ceremony Friday, May 10, to celebrate our MS Girls Soccer Team, MS Boys Lacrosse Team, US Varsity Co-Ed Soccer Team, and all of the families, coaches, and volunteers who helped to provide a fun and rewarding spring season of sports.

Here are some highlights from the event.

2018-2019 Leonard Cowherd Award Winners: Jill Chiu and Anna Schuster

This special award was presented by Leonard and Mary Ann Cowherd in memory and honor of their son, Army Second Lieutenant Leonard M. Cowherd, III, who died in 2004 in while in the service of his country.  The award recognizes students for their service and dedication to the school as elected officers, athletes, and individuals who have volunteered many hours to school sponsored events during their high school careers.

Middle School Lacrosse
Middle School Lacrosse was under the direction of Coach Aron Weber again this season. The roster was small with eight 8th grade players, one 6th grader and three 5th graders. Scoring was dominated by seasoned travel players Manoa Weber and Maddox Lowe. With the small roster, every player contributed to the winning season. Their victories included two wins each over Culpeper LAX (11-1 and 13-7), Fredericksburg Academy (9-1 and 7-1), and Sacred Heart Academy (9-4 and 11-5).  WCDS also defeated Grymes School for the first time in recent years, 7-5. Congratulations to the team and Coach Weber for a great 7-3 winning season.

Owen Schuster earned the Most Improved Player Award for his dedication to improve his game.  Manoa Weber as the leading scorer earned the Most Valuable Player Award. The Coach’s Award went to Winston McKee.

Middle School Girls Soccer
Our young Middle School Owls were led by Head Coach Ann Pankow. Several schools we have competed against in the past did not have teams this season, and that reduced our schedule considerably.  The girls struggled to net goals but had a season high of five goals in a close 6-5 non-conference loss to Mountain View Christian Academy. WCDS also gained a 1-0 forfeit win over Mountain View on 5/2/19. Our players combined with the Upper School girls on the Co-Ed Varsity Soccer Club to play two JV games on 4/25/19 and 5/7/19. Congratulations to Coach Pankow, Coach Nicole Wyant and the team for a season of development and growth.

Ava Lubkemann played several positions and earned the Most Valuable Player Award.  Ruthie McMahon was selected for the Coaches Award. New player Sophia Esposito won the award for the Most Improved Player.

COED Varsity Soccer
Our Varsity Owls played a short season under the coaching of Gustavo Tisera. The team beat the Co-Ed team from Valley Escape on 4/8/19 by a score of 7-1, and they faced Valley Escape again on 4/26/19 with a 5-2 victory.  John Mullins led the scoring for the Owls. Seniors Jill Chiu and Anna Schuster were team captains. Congratulations to Coach Tisera and the team for their success.

John Mullins won the Most Valuable Player award; captains Jill Chiu and Anna Schuster earned Co-Coach’s Awards.

Remarks:
Mike Costello, CAA Athletic Director: “This spring has been encouraging, and our teams have fought the good fight. All of our teams showed improved play over the course of the season. Middle School Lacrosse had another winning year under new Coach Weber’s direction, and Co-Ed Varsity Soccer went 2-0 under Coach Tisera. We are proud of our teams. Go OWLS!”
