Scripps National Spelling Bee

This year, WCDS held its first annual Scripps National School Spelling Bee on January 27, 2023! During the months of December and January grades 1-8 held their classroom bees to determine who would participate in the schoolwide bee. The classroom winners and runners-up were: Kalani Loving, Owen Smith, Emma Padgett, Grace Collings, Alex Zajac, Beatrice Hoffman, Adam Lindemann-Cox, Fatihah Sesay, Addison Fairhurst, Mackenzie Clark, Adri Ayala, Claudia Achilla, Luci Esposito, Danny Coleman, Aeo Cheng, and Levi Clemmer.

During the School Bee, all participants stood proudly on the WCDS stage in the auditorium with a big audience cheering them on. Some students in the crowd held up special signs to cheer on their classmates. All participants on stage were still standing after the first two rounds of words. Round three of the competition began to get more challenging! After several more rounds, only three students remained Adam, Adri, and Aeo. In the end, Aeo an eighth grader won third place, Adri a sixth grader won second, and Adam a fourth grader became our school champion! Adam’s winning word was intubated.

Adam proceeded to study more to take a difficult Regional Qualifier Online Test. Students had to correctly spell and know the word meanings of at least thirty out of fifty words to proceed to the next level. Unfortunately, Adam did not meet the benchmark for this test. However, after speaking to him, he’s determined to learn more words over the summer and come back even stronger next year! Congratulations to Adam Lindemann-Cox and the rest of the WCDS Scripps National School Spelling Bee participants of our 2022-2023 school year!
