Renaissance Masterpieces: To See and Sketch

At Washington DC’s National Gallery of Art, WCDS students view The Nativity by Duccio di Buoninsegna and sketch The Alba Madonna by Leonardo da Vinci.

Last Thursday the 9th grade class travelled to the National Gallery in Washington, DC, to participate in a Renaissance Art program where they viewed several pieces created by Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, and Titian.  Students learned about the artists, the techniques used, and examined in detail the placement of all items within the portraits.  They also had a chance to sketch a Raphael piece, The Alba Madonna, and participate in a discussion of the piece aimed at encouraging them to explore the painting from different perspectives.
