VAR Girls Basketball
The Owls traveled to Saint Michael the Archangel High School for a game on 12/3/18. WCDS, playing without a starter, led the Warriors 5-1 after the first quarter and 13-5 at the half. In the third quarter the Warriors wore down the Owls, outscoring them 12-4, and tied the game, 17-17. The Warriors hit five foul shots in the final quarter and a bank shot three-point basket to take the win, 26-23. Eighth grader Ave Lubkemann led the Owls with 12 points in her first varsity game. Jill Chiu added seven points. Alexis Cross scored her first varsity points with a basket, and Agatha Chen also had a basket.
The Owls played short a player again at Randolph-Macon Academy on 12/6/18. Two starters were also battling illness. The Yellow Jackets were efficient in their half-court defense and offense. WCDS scored 20 points in the game to the Jackets 36 points. Jill Chiu and Ave Lubkemann each scored seven points. Agatha Chen added four points, and Emma O’Neill scored her first two career varsity points, going 2 for 2 from the foul line. Our record is 0-2 on the season.
VAR Boys Basketball
The Owls opened their season with a DAC game at Saint Michael’s on 12/3/18. The Warriors were shooting hot in the first quarter burying four 3-point baskets to lead 20-13 at the end of the quarter. Ben Kelsey had eight points for WCDS in the quarter. The Owls switched into a man-to-man defense to get out on the shooters better and held the Warriors to just four 3-point baskets in the final three quarters. WCDS outscored the Warriors 13-7 in the second quarter behind John Mullins’ five points to be down just 27-26 at the half. Mullins put up eight points in the third quarter, and the Owls were down 41-38 entering the final quarter. The Owls were led by Kevin He with seven points in the quarter and the team outscored the Warriors 14-7 to win in a come-from-behind fashion, 52-48. Ben Kelsey led WCDS with a big double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds. John Mullins also had a double-double, leading the team with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Kevin He scored 11 points and had four steals. Martin O’Heir added five points and three assists. Hank Lin added four points. Our record is 1-0 in the DAC and overall.
JV Boys Basketball
The Owls hosted the Front Royal Flames for a JV game on 12/6/18. The Owls led 11-0 at the end of the first quarter and 22-7 at the half. Hank Lin led WCDS with eight points in the half. John Mullins hit two three-point shots in the third quarter, scoring 14 of the team’s 18 points. WCDS led 40-9 at the end of the quarter. The Warriors outscored the Owls 9-8 in the final quarter, but WCDS won, 48-18. John Mullins finished with 24 points and six steals. Ben Kelsey and Hank Lin each scored eight points. Martin O’Heir had 10 rebounds, and Alex Diehl contributed four points and four steals. Ezra Aaronson and Ian Heffron scored the first points of their careers with a basket each. Our record is 1-0.
