The Owls traveled to Sacred Heart Academy for the VMSC Championship match on 10/12/18. The Saints controlled the match with a 25-11, 25-9 sweep. Congratulations to Coach Pankow and the girls for being the VMSC Tournament Runner-Up.
The Owls visited Highland School to square off against the Hawks A Team on 10/16/18. WCDS won the first set, 25-20, and lost a close second set, 23-25. WCDS won the deciding set, 15-11. Our record is 8-3 overall.
MS Cross Country
The Owls ran a VMSC Championship race at Randolph-Macon Academy on 10/18/18. The race was formatted with mixed male and female runners. Mariel Scoville led the girls for the first time in the season with an 18th place finish in 19:56. Maeve Ciuba finished 19th in 20:01. Carmen O’Neill finished 24th in 20:54, and Sydney Gerard finished 25th in 20:58. Jack Gerard, our lone male runner, finished 40th in 19:04. Congratulations to Coach Wyant and the team for a season of improvement.
The Owls hosted Fresta Valley Christian in the VMSC quarterfinals 10/12/18. The Pioneers struck the net first, but Sean Regan tied the score with a WCDS goal and it was 1-1 at the half. Sean Regan scored again in the second half, and Winston McKee also scored to give the boys a 3-1 victory.
WCDS advanced to play in the VMSC semi-finals at #1 seed Chelsea Academy on 10/15/18. The Knights were in control of the game and went on to win, 8-1. Jacob DiDomenico scored the lone goal for WCDS. Our record is 2-4-1 overall.
The Owls traveled to Tandem Friends School for a match on 10/16/18. WCDS won the tight first set, 25-17. The Badgers won the second set 25-17, setting up a battle for the final set. It was close, but the Badgers prevailed, 15-13, to hand the Owls their first loss of the season, 2-1. Our record is 3-1 on the season.
The Owls traveled to Tandem Friends School in a DAC DII match on 10/16/18. WCDS lost the first set to the hard-hitting Badgers team, 25-15. WCDS came back for a 25-20 second set win to even the match. The third set proved to be just as tough with WCDS winning, 25-23. The Badgers fought back in the fourth set and tied the match with a 25-22 win. The final set was another very tight one with WCDS prevailing, 15-13, to win the match 3-2.
The Owls hosted Saint Michael’s in a DAC match on 10/18/18. WCDS won the first set 25-9. The Lady Owls took the second set, 25-14, and cruised in the third set to a 25-6 victory and a 3-0 sweep. Our record is 6-3 in the DAC and 8-4 overall.
VAR Cross Country
The Owls raced at Tandem Friends School in DAC Race #3 on 10/16/18. There were 86 male runners at the race. Jefferson Day led WCDS with a 52nd place finish in 22:02. Peter McMahon clocked a 23:55 for 72nd place. Tim Tickal finished 77th in 25:00. James Gao finished 82nd in 27:00 minutes, and Ian Heffron finished 86th in 31:08.
The Owls hosted Eukarya Academy on 10/12/18 for a non-conference game. WCDS turned in a 2-2 halftime tie into a 5-2 victory. Michael Marciano manned the keeper position in the first half, and Martin O’Heir was the keeper in the second half shutting out the Lions. Both Porter Gilliam and John Mullins netted two goals. Griffin Landis scored the other goal. Porter Gilliam, Griffin Landis, and Masa Nakauchi earned assists in the win.
The Owls hosted Saint Michael the Archangel for a DAC game on 10/16/18. WCDS found a number of shots on goal in the first half but did not get a goal until 6:17 remaining in the half when John Mullins blasted a pass to Griffin Landis in front of the goal that Landis kicked for a score. The Owls led 1-0 at the half but continued to get good looks at the goal. John Mullins scored off an assist from Porter Gilliam with 29:25 left in the game and again six minutes later, also assisted by Porter Gilliam. Porter Gilliam scored the final goal with 16:32 left for a 4-0 DAC victory. Martin O’Heir manned the keeper position in the first half of the shut out with Michael Marciano in goal for the second half.
The Owls hosted Massanutten Military Academy for a non-conference game on 10/17/18. The Colonels split the Owls’ defense for a goal just over two minutes into the game. WCDS managed two goals in the half: one by John Mullins and one by Porter Gilliam. Gilliam and Mullins assisted each other on their goals for a 2-1 halftime lead. Keeper Michael Marciano and his defense shut out the Colonels in the second half while their teammates scored five goals. John Mullins took a nice pass form Porter Gilliam just a minute in for a goal. Gilliam scored an unassisted goal with 25:45 left in the game and then again off an assist from Mullins with 16:50 remaining to get a hat trick. John Mullins scored his third goal for a hat trick with 7:27 left in the game. Porter Gilliam finished off the scoring with his fourth goal with 6:40 left in the game. The Owls have won four games in a row. Our record is 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the DAC on the season.
