MS Volleyball

The Owls hosted Chelsea Academy for a VMSC match on 9/24/18.  We had an 11-8 lead in the first set when Claire Mullins rotated to serve and served five straight points.  The Owls went on to a first set 25-17 win.  The second set was tied six times, but again Claire Mullins rotated to serve an ace and three points, and the girls went on to win the set 25-22 for a 2-0 sweep of the Knights.  Lauren Mehl led the team with five service aces while Ruthie McMahon added four aces.  Claire Mullins had two aces in the match.

 

The Owls were challenged by the serving power of the Yellow Jackets from Randolph-Macon Academy on 9/26/18.   The girls got out to an early lead in the first set with Lauren Mehl serving the first five points of the match, but the Jackets fought back and tied the set, 14-14. The Jackets spread their lead to 23-15 before taking the first set 25-18.    The Owls tied the match with a 25-19 hard-fought win in the second set. Following two aces and a side out for the Jackets, Alexis Cross took over the serve with a slight 21-19 lead. Cross served the final four points of the set including two aces for a 25-19 win.   Ava Lubkemann and Ruthie McMahon contributed aces in the set.   The Jackets took the lead in the final set, five to three, on the strength of  four straight aces. A kill by Claire Mullins tied the set at 8-8. Ava Lubekmann rotated to serve with the Owls up 10-9 and served out the set and match with four aces in five points for the 2-1 team win. Our record is 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the VMSC.

 

JV Volleyball

The Owls traveled to Chelsea Academy for a match on 9/24/18.  The girls earned a 2-0 sweep by the scores of  25-18 and 25-20.  Our record is 2-0 on the season.

  

VAR Volleyball

The Owls traveled to the Knights of Chelsea Academy on 9/24/18, playing one of their best matches of the season against the strong Knights.   The Knights prevailed on three challenging sets by the scores of 25-18, 25-19, and 25-22.

 

The Owls played on back-to-back days when they traveled to Randolph-Macon Academy for a DAC match on 9/25/18.  The first set was a battle, with the Owls coming from behind. An ace by Anna Schuster and a kill by Gwynn Major gave the girls a 22-13 lead. The Owls held the lead the entire second set and went on to a 25-14 win. Anna Schuster and Mari Tisera each had two aces in the set. Mari Tisera and Lucy Clark led the girls with three kills each; Anna Schuster added two kills to the winning set. The third and final set came the Owls’ way when Anna Schuster served an ace and four straight points for a 5-2 lead. Three straight serving points and an ace gave the Owls a 15-9 lead, and the set and match ended with a kill for a 3-0 sweep of the match. Anna Schuster had two aces and three kills in the set while Rachel Cieplak had two aces.  Our record is 2-2 in the DAC and 3-2 overall.

 

VAR Cross Country

The Owls competed in the Fredericksburg Academy Invitational on 9/25/18. Sloppy weather caused some teams to withdraw from the race, but the Owls pushed their way through a wet course. Five out of six Owls trimmed time off their best times thus far this season.  Peter McMahon led the team with a 23rd place finish in 23:41.  Michael Marciano clocked a 23:58 to finish 27th.  Jefferson Day crossed in 24:02 for 28th place.  Timothy Tickal crossed in 38th place in 27:04. Ian Heffron made the best time improvement on the team cutting six minutes off his previous fast time clocking 28:57 for 43rd place, and Hank Lin finished in 50th place with a time of 30:25.
