WCDS students participate extensively in events sponsored by the Junior Classical League, which is a dynamic national organization devoted to the study and promotion of the classics. These events include yearly state and national conventions and monthly Certamen matches hosted by public and private schools around the state.
Each year State and National Junior Classical Conventions draw over 1,500 Latin students who compete in a wide array of academic, dramatic and artistic competitions. At the state convention WCDS students routinely win top awards in all of these events, and the school delegation often has one of the highest number of awards won per student of any school attending. The National Convention is a week long event held on a college campus. WCDS students recently brought home 72 events from the convention held at Wake Forest University.
Certamen is a competition akin to Latin Quiz Bowl. Using an electronic buzzer system, three teams at a time compete to answer questions on Latin, Roman history and culture, and Greek and Roman Mythology. After the preliminary rounds, the top teams at each level advance to the finals, where they compete for medals or trophies. Events are contested on weekends at schools all around the state. During this past academic year, WCDS teams placed in the top five in all of the Certamina in which they participated.
